AWI Surgery and Riflemen

The ever helpful Brendan Morrissey suggested I take a closer look at the way the right arms of my Continentals are placed.  In several cases they were in unison with their right legs and created what he called the 'tick tock' effect.  I have to say I wasn't totally happy with the way these figures looked and of course that's the reason why.  So, armed with a sharp scalpel I set about carrying out a little plastic surgery.  I didn't correct every figure, just the worst offenders and I'm much happier with these now.

So here's how they were before:

And now:

Meanwhile I'm very happy with the riflemen.  These are Perry metals and are a joy to paint.  The muted colours are quite a contrast to the Continentals and British regulars.  Not quite finished yet, but nearly there.

  2. I must admit that from the pictures I can’t really tell about the arms, but as long as you’re happy!

  3. Very well done on both units! I had to look twice but you were perfectly right about the right arms.

  4. What is the tic toc effect? What did you do to the arms? I plan on using perry for sharp practice as well.

    1. Apparently the right arm should swing in the opposite direction to the right leg, you don’t want the arm forward with the leg, looks odd. I just cut through the join where I’d glued the arm to the body and glued it back in a new position. One thing to note is that marching with swinging arms is a fairly new phenomena, so while the arms should look like they are moving backwards avoid anything too extreme.

  5. What colours/techniques did you use on the rifle men's coats ? I have a few to paint myself and I like the look of these

    1. I used Vallejo acrylics and a mix of earth type colours - flat earth and German medium brown mainly, then just used these lightened to paint the highlights.
