I agree the T1 move was aggressive, but I thought going tactical out of SMG range and covered by a squad and a gun was a worthwhile risk. With alternating phases......

Deploying the FT in the open was a desperation move. But again, if Mark only got a single phase then the FT gets a second shot rather than being wiped out.

Purchase wise I though about the mortars but after last game I thought I might not need them. As the Russiansare in hard cover it won’t do that much damage although it does suppress them. The way he was rolling he would have just turn ended the barrage anyway....I like your thoughts though. Happens that way sometimes and I’ve been on both sides of it.
As others have said above the great thing about a campaign is that the string of good luck will be able to be repaid later on. 😀Stewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00340930167419307092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861229654080360536.post-77410825314720382372019-02-23T16:18:51.461+11:002019-02-23T16:18:51.461+11:00Yes and no I think. Consider this, if the Germans ...Yes and no I think. Consider this, if the Germans had not deployed that squad in the open the Russians would not have had any targets. After all, the damage was all done by two Russian LMGs, no other weapon fired. What made this worse was that Dave deployed one of his core platoon squads instead of a support squad. What started to impact his thinking were the rising casualties of core platoon men. That could have been avoided if the squad was in cover and/or it was a support squad. It was only the sense of desperation caused by the casualties in that squad that led to the deployment of the flamethrower. While it could have been successful there was a high element of risk (even without a double phase) that the LMGs could take it out (two LMGs at 12 fire dice could expect 6 hits with average dice. In the open you would expect average dice again to give two kills and two shock - enough to break the flamethrower team in a single phase of fire). If we consider that it was the support squad that was deployed, then it's loss was not catastrophic, as at that stage the Russians had themselves taken 7 casualties, the near equivalent of an SMG squad. So despite the double phases the Germans could still have outnumbered the Russians and had the added firepower of the infantry gun. See my replies to various posts above. I think the game hinged on a few other events that get forgotten in all the attention given to the double phases. The two Russian squads on the table were reduced to two men each, effectively out of the game and this was primarily down to the fire of the German squad and infantry gun. That left just two Russian squads to defend the school. Had the flamethrower team had more luck and then the Germans deployed their two remaining squads it would have left the Russians defending the school against three German squads, an infantry gun and the flamethrower team. Losses prior to the routing of the Unterfeldwebel and Obergefreiter were 7 Russians and 10 German, not a bad exchange given the Germans were attacking Russians in hard cover. The Tactical Painterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04980190745315043364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861229654080360536.post-47588816128657624432019-02-23T10:16:36.473+11:002019-02-23T10:16:36.473+11:00I'm with you Phil - the fortunes of war and al...I'm with you Phil - the fortunes of war and all that. I don't think this game was lost because of the double phases, although they certainly played a part. I think the bad luck with the flamethrower and the disastrous routing of the Unterfeldwebel with the sudden turn end were more significant turning points in the game. Until that moment the double phases were not enough in themselves to seal defeat for the Germans. The Tactical Painterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04980190745315043364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861229654080360536.post-5464680850379338022019-02-23T10:14:05.769+11:002019-02-23T10:14:05.769+11:00Thanks Mattis, glad you enjoy the AARs. I can't agree that getting so many double phases is a flaw, all rules are subject to the vagaries of the dice. Obviously it can be very frustrating for the opponent, like real life? but c'est la guerre, and it is not as though it is a regular occurrence, unless others have experienced otherwise. It is also a good reason to play a campaign rather than one off games, not always an option of course, I play infrequently as my regular opponent dislikes the rules, however I do endeavour to link them together some way. Enough waffle, thank you for the entertaining post, looking forward to the next encounter.Phil Robinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14951076081660516802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7861229654080360536.post-75243539532146652742019-02-22T19:33:50.322+11:002019-02-22T19:33:50.322+11:00You do really great AARs! I'm putting it down to one of those extreme and rare swings of luck given I've never encountered anything like it before after many CoC games. Various house rules exist to mitigate it and yet I'm not totally convinced the game is flawed with it (then again I wasn't on the receiving end!).
